Abstract

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is still a difficult problem because of its complex pathophysiology. Stem cell transplantation are considered as the most promising treatment for SCI due to their nerve regeneration and neuroprotective effect. The methods of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (HUC-MSC) culture and differentiation have been improved. Moreover, the mechanism of neural repair has been preliminarily clarified. Combination therapy and other comprehensive treatment have improved the effect of stem cell transplantation. In addition, several clinical trials on stem cell therapy are on the way. HUC-MSCs transplantation can significantly improve the neurological function of patients without serious complications, indicating that stem cell therapy is safe and effective in human. This review summarizes and discusses recent advances on HUC-MSCs therapy for SCI. Key words: Spinal cord injury; Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells; Cell transplantation; Combination therapy
