Abstract

The generation of picosecond light pulses in the IR is reviewed. Two recently developed techniques are discussed in detail. New laser dyes of high photochemical stability give laser action up to 1.85 μm. High laser efficiency is possible in a traveling-wave pumping system in spite of the small quantum efficiency of the dyes. Picosecond pulses between 1.2 and 10μm are generated by parametric interaction in AgGaS 2 crystals. Quantum efficiencies as high as 10% have been observed for idler wavelengths around 4 μm.
