Abstract

OTOSCLEROSIS For some time it has been realized that microscopic study of the temporal bones was not likely to lead any further in the understanding of the more important forms of deafness such as otosclerosis and nerve deafness. No new facts have been discovered in histology, and there is still considerable difference of opinion as to the interpretation of the appearances seen. Of late years some of these problems have been attacked from a new angle, notably that of biochemistry, and data have been obtained that begin to throw new light on the etiology of otosclerosis and nerve deafness. There is now at last a prospect, however faint, that the principles of a rational and effective treatment for otosclerosis may in a few years be worked out.
