Abstract

Teaching techniques are to the forè this month as we have several books in that area, namely, Spelling: Task and Learnerby Barrie Wade and Klaus Wedell, Effective Teaching Methods for Autistic Children by Rosalind C. Oppenheim; Typing Keys for Remediation of Reading and Spelling by Maetta Davis, and Teaching the Mentally Handicapped Child edited by Ralph Hyatt and Norma Rolnick. This last book is an excellent collection of nine very different types of papers. The prevention of learning disabilities through early screening procedures and corrective prescriptions during kindergarten and first grade is being implemented all over the nation. The Bannatyne System: Early Screening Tests are based on years of research and should be valuable to interested school districts and cooperatives. Ralph Blanco's book entitled Prescriptions for Children with Learning and Adjustment Problems is highly recommended, although the content is mostly for older children. Those interested in career education and aptitude testing should consider the Differential Aptitude Test and Career Planning Program. The Dos Amigos Verbal Language Scales by Donald Critchlow should pique the curiosity of teachers of Spanish-speaking children. A physician from Norwich, Conn., reports on an innovative gadget to help handicapped children learn to play the guitar.
