Abstract

A chart, proposing a standardized approach to the management of acute head injuries is presented. According to the severity of their condition, patients are divided into three groups; for each group the authors give a detailed description of situation encountered, clinical findings, rationale of treatment and actual management. The main points of the presentation are two: 1) the vital role played by carotid angiography; 2) a set of rules that might help physicians in knowing “what to do” when confronted with a case of severe head injury, and which take into consideration the limitations of time imposed by the patient's condition.
