Abstract

The development of coding and programmable metamaterials in the past three years is reviewed by Tie Jun Cui and Shuo Liu in article number 1700624, focusing primarily on the basic concept, working principle, design method, fabrication, and experimental validation. By presenting reflection-type, refraction-type, and bifunctional coding metamaterials, the convolution operations on coding metamaterials, as well as digitally programmable metamaterials and their powerful manipulation capabilities to electromagnetic waves, are demonstrated.
