Abstract

The mining company is ultimately responsible for impacts resulting from its mining activities. This responsibility does not end with cessation of mining activities but continues till the mining lease is relinquished. This program for a mine closure is intended to assist mining companies in providing effective life-of-the-mine strategies for mine closure during all phases of mineral development i.e. from initial exploration to closure and final tenement relinquishment. The program includes setting of objectives and defining completion criteria, planning, decommissioning, monitoring and reporting. Regulating authorities require that all mining companies must, throughout the life-of-the-mine, plan for mine closure and report rehabilitation and decommissioning activities.
