Abstract
<b>Introduction:</b> Both, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) patients have a higher risk to develop cardiovascular disease. The co-existence of both diseases, called Overlap syndrome (OVS), must receive special attention. The study aims to compare cardiovascular parameters and oxygen desaturation index (ODI) markers of OVS patients with COPD ones. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> In this transversal case-control study, polysomnographic, spirometric and echocardiographic parameters were compared between OVS and COPD patients. <b>Results:</b> 44 OSV, mean age 68.6 years, and 30 COPD, mean age 70 years, patients were included, both groups were similar for age, FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC and daytime oximetry. However, we found significant difference in ODI, OVS=11,1e/h, vs COPD 1,9 e/h, p<0.01. Left atrium was larger in OVS patients (OVS=41.5mm vs COPD 37.0mm, p=0.02). <b>Conclusions:</b> OVS patients are at higher cardiovascular risk, it is necessary to enforce screening and diagnostic programs for the identification of OVS, with better control of risk factors.
