Abstract
Progesterone (PROG) is a naturally occurring steroid hormone. Emerging data indicate that PROG has non-reproductive functions including roles in neurogenesis, neuro-regeneration and cerebrovascular dilation, the latter being a rationale for PROG use in recovery from traumatic brain injury. PROG actions have been traditionally linked to activation of cytosolic and membrane-bound steroid receptors. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the vasoactive properties of PROG remain largely unknown.
