Abstract
Born in Anaconda, Montana, in 1951, Wellems spent most of his childhood in New Mexico after his family moved to the outskirts of Albuquerque in 1955. “I have fond memories of the mountains, hiking and fishing with my dad, siblings, and friends,” Wellems says. His father, Thomas J. Wellems, a structural engineer, had “a large influence in supporting my attraction to the sciences,” he recalls.
