Abstract

Addiction to alcohol and other drugs is a major health problem in the United States today. Although there is a growing concern over the prevalence of this problem in the nursing profession, there has been limited recent research regarding the characteristics of chemically dependent nurses. The purpose of this study was to describe the profile of the chemically dependent nurse in a New England state and to identify existing associations among characteristics. A sample of 43 nurses currently participating in a legislated rehabilitation program of a Board of Registration in Nursing was used. Results suggest that chemically dependent nurses work in hospital settings, on medical surgical units, and primarily on the day shift. Nurses were referred to the substance abuse program most often by their employers. Subjects reported a history of medical problems and had experienced past attempts at treatment for their addiction.
