Abstract

The ideal frank of involute hob has been shown by K. Terashima et al. in 1972. The accuracy of hob with the ideal frank is not theoretically deteriorated by the repeated re-sharpening of cutting face, not excepting the multi-start thread hob that is used in automobile factory. This paper shows the calculating method of the grinding wheel profile to grind the ideal flank of involute hob. The grinding wheel based on this method is applicable to the generally used cam-controlled relieving grinding machine for hob finishing. By numerical calculation, it is shown that the profile error of grinding wheel for the hob of module 2, 3-start threads, 35 mm pitch dia. is about 10μm under the cutting face re sharpening angle 16°.
