Abstract

The profile of the volunteer blood donor was compiled from 48 replies to a questionnaire circulated to the 76 members of our “8-Pint Blood Donor Club” and was presented at the second annual dinner meeting of the club. Holy Cross Hospital is a 426-bed hospital located in a predominantly middle-class neighborhood with citizens of European descent. In 1973, the hospital used 3,064 units of blood, obtained entirely from volunteer donors. Arguments for and against the concept of volunteer donors have been aptly stated elsewhere and need not be considered here.1,2,3 It has been stated that only 3% of potential volunteer donors actually donate blood. We felt it might be of interest to those who are involved in collecting volunteer donors and who wish to expand their donor base, to compare the present profile with their own donor population.
