Abstract
In studying low-income working women the author has adopted the methodology of in-depth case studies. She has obtained answers to questions regarding employment consumption saving and investment. This in-depth study concerns Kalyani a 35-year-old agricultural laborer belonging to one of the scheduled castes who lives with her husband and 5 children in a small thatched hut in a squatter settlement on the outskirts of the city of Trivandrum capital of Kerala State. The author describes the economy of Kalyanis household and the difficulties presented by 1) the insecurity of day laboring and 2) her husbands values. These difficulties become acute when an unexpected disaster occurs such as the loss of their thatched roof during the monsoon.
