Abstract

Profile of the ideal pelvic floor specialist Various caregivers are involved in the treatment of functional pelvic floor disorders in the Netherlands. Traditionally the organisation of the pelvic care is organ based. Treatment of pelvic floor disorders of one organ tract might negatively influence another organ system’s behaviour. Nowadays, those treatments that might have most negative impact on other organs systems are given by specialists that do not take care of the negative side effects themselves. For this reason and for a more integrative approach pelvic care centers were founded. The issue is whether this organisational model is the best and the most efficient. An ideally trained pelvic floor specialist should be able to take care of most functional pelvic floor disorders and the occurring complications. Because surgical interventions will be necessary in the future but also cause most severe complications, the surgical skills of the pelvic floor specialist are very important. This implies that a thorough surgical training, surgical experience and knowledge of al pelvic floor organs are of paramount importance.
