Abstract

The role of proficiency testing (PT) is discussed in relation to its importance in assisting laboratory management to ensure that the use of routine laboratory test methods provides reliable results. Across Europe, there are many PT schemes that provide for the needs of laboratories in food and water microbiology. The organization of PT schemes is discussed and illustrated by examples and figures relating to analysis of participant results. A pan-European scheme for evaluation of reference laboratories and official control laboratories is discussed briefly.
