Abstract

Yahiko Kambayashi was born in Osaka Prefecture on 15 February 1943. He completed a Bachelor's Degree at the Department of Electronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University (March 1965), and entered the Department of Electronic Science and Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, in April of the same year. He completed this Master's Degree in March 1967, and immediately moved on to the Doctoral Program, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University. He left the Doctoral Program in March 1970, after acquiring partial credits, to take up a position as a Research Associate at the Kyoto University Data Processing Center in April 1970, but soon completed the Ph.D. Program, receiving a D. Eng. (Doctoral Degree, Engineering) from Kyoto University in September of the same year. After holding positions as Visiting Research Associate at the University of Illinois from February 1971, Research Associate at the Division of Information Science, Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University, from March 1973, Lecturer in the same Department from December 1973, and Associate Professor from October 1976, he was appointed as Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Communication Engineering, Kyushu University, in April 1984. Since that time, Dr. Kambayashi has held positions as Professor at the Integrated Media Environment Experimental Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University (from July 1990), Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University (from August 1995), Professor at the Department of Information Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University (from April 1996), Professor at the Department of Social Informatics, Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University (from April 1998), Regent of Kyoto University (from April 2002), and Dean of the Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University (from April 2003). Over the years, he has also held concurrent positions as Visiting Professor at McGill University in Canada, Kuwait University,Wuhan University in China, and Kansai University, and as Vice-President and Director of the Advanced Software Technology and Mechatronics Research Institute of Kyoto. Dr. Kambayashi was hospitalized after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage at work on February 4, 2004, and passed away on February 6. He was 60 years old.
