Daniel L Traber, PhD (Figure 1), an alumnus and longtime faculty member at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), passed away on 19 September 2012 after a 2-year illness
A quintessential translational scientist, Dr Traber served on the UTMB faculty for over 50 years – most recently as the Charles Robert Allen Professor of Anesthesiology, Professor of Neuroscience and Cell Biology, and Director of the Investigational Intensive Care Unit
After completing a postdoctoral fellowship in Pharmacology at Ohio State University, College of Medicine, Dr Traber joined the UTMB faculty in 1966 and, except for sabbatical leaves, remained on the active faculty until his death His sabbaticals included several highly productive visits to the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute in Vienna, Austria to work with the prominent critical care scientist Günther Schlag
