Abstract

Professionalization is discussed as resocialization, an acquisition of a new identity. This means not only discontinuity with the past but an unlearning of its cherished sentiments: the trainee must first realize the moral irrelevance—nay, absurdity—of his old occupational self as a precondition for identification with his new occupation. Status reduction leading to status enhancement, development of a somber uniform for the group, redefinition and relabelling of oneself in relation to others, adoption of a new ideology, and contact situations that serve as rites of passage to build up the trainee's confidence and competence are examined as components of this resocialization process.
