Abstract

The topic of this paper aside, many in our society would build the idea of autonomy or self-regulation into their very concept of a professional. Nothing of practical importance follows from the definition of a concept. Whatever we attempt to include in the definition of a professional by way of moral implication, it can always be questioned why we construe the concept in that way. Nevertheless, in attempting to capture the common under standing of what it is to be a professional in our society, we can begin to understand the bases for their claims to power and authority and the need to limit the satisfaction of those claims.
