LEARNING OUTCOME:To identify the current practice and growth opportunities of Diet Technicians Registered in California.Design 385 surveys were sent to Diet Technicians Registered (DTR) in California. The survey consisted of nine questions relating to education, job functions, growth potential, job satisfaction and salary range. Of the 385 surveys sent, 374 were delivered, 99 were completed and returned (26% return rate).Subject All DTRs statewide, members and non-members of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).Results Most DTRs have Associate Degrees in nutrition related fields, and have completed an ADA approved diet technician program. Major areas of practice are clinical and food service management. Primary responsibilities include screening, menu modification, food preferences, education and counseling patients, documentation in medical records, monitoring food quality and patient satisfaction, and computer data entry. Developing an improved working relationship with Registered Dietitians (RD) was expressed. The majority of DTRs surveyed indicated limited or no advancement opportunities.ConclusionOverall, respondents felt positive about the profession. Many would prefer less clerical and increased clinical responsibilities including patient contact, nutrition counseling, and charting. The development of a team approach with the RD will increase job satisfaction and overall status of the DTR position. With the changing health care environment, advancement opportunities of the profession should continue to improve.
