Abstract

School counseling as a profession is in its embryonic stage in Vietnam. National education reform initiatives have focused on curricula, standardized tests and textbooks, yet have essentially ignored problems of violence and students’ mental health. The American School Counseling Association model can serve as a guide for a culturally appropriate school counseling model for Vietnam. We explore the Vietnam education context and the existing practice of school counseling and make recommendations for professional school counseling in Vietnam.
