hears the term marching band, the first descriptive word associated with it is probably not beautiful. I associate march ing band with words like unity, form, structure, discipline, and poise. Once these words occur to me, I can begin link ing the word beautiful with a marching band. As an artist and a music educator, I like to find ways to connect these two dis ciplines and help others understand and value this relationship. In many communities, concert band is considered the center of the instrumen tal music program because it connects students with history and culture dating back several centuries.
