Abstract

Science literacy skills in basic education can build knowledge skills and scientific skills. This capability requires efforts made through the Professional Learning Community (PLC). Therefore, this study aims to reveal in depth the scientific literacy skills of social studies teachers in Cirebon City and the coaching efforts carried out through PLC. This study uses a qualitative approach through a survey method of teachers in 20 Islamic Elementary Schools (IPS/Madrasah Ibtidaiyah) Cirebon City. The research instrument used a scientific literacy test based on the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competency and the development of Gormally’s Test of Scientific Literacy Skills and a questionnaire. The results showed that the PLC’s efforts in developing teachers’ scientific literacy skills as a whole were 66.8%, the average overall scientific literacy result was 58.l, in the category of scientific literacy ability to understand the inquiry method to master science knowledge, the result was the scientific literacy score was 6l.3. Meanwhile, in the category of scientific literacy skills in organizing, analyzing and interpreting quantitative data and scientific information, it is 48.3. Therefore, the scientific literacy skills of social studies teachers in Cirebon City need to be improved intensively through PLC.
