Abstract

Day (1999) defines professional development as “the set of natural learning experiences as well as the conscious and planned activities whose purpose is to benefit the individual, group or school directly or indirectly and which have the objective to contribute to the quality of classroom education” (p. 4). Richards and Farrell (2005) claim that professional development is “the general growth aimed at reaching a longer term-goal and which often involves examining the different dimensions of the teachers’ practice in order to improve their performance in the classroom” (p. 4). The professional development can be done through many formats. Birman, Desimone, Porter and Garet (2000) claimed that professional development belongs to two basic categories: (i) traditional professional development and (ii) reform-type professional development. The traditional professional development uses “one-shot” workshops as a tool to provide teachers with the competences and skills they need. Keywords: second language, ESL teaching methods, professional development, ESL teachers, foreign language acquisition, etc.
