Abstract

Having dedicated forty years of his life to raising poultry health care in the Netherlands to a high s tandard, the Nestor of the Dutch poultry veterinarians, Prof. W. J. Roepke has decided to retire and to enjoy a well-deserved rest. Walter Johann Roepke was born on June 6th, 1917 in Salatiga in the former Dutch East Indies. He passed his high school examinat ions at Wageningen, where his father Dr. W. K. J. Roepke was professor in genetics at the University of Agriculture. His great interest in biological sciences lead to his decision to study veterinary mcdicine at the State University of Utrecht, where he graduated in 1942. After his graduation, he worked in several institutes of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. His schooling in zootechnical sciences under Prof. Dr. Van der Plank and in pathology under Prof. Dr. Schornagel was an excellent basis for the pioneers task which he set himself in 1944: the realisation of field-orientated control of poultry diseases based upon the results of intensive research.
