Abstract

An experimental setup and photochemical approaches used for extracting highly enriched mercury isotopes at the Russian Research Center Kurchatov Institute are described. In the extraction process, selectively excited mercury atoms are oxidized in the presence of 1,3-butadiene. Along with the Hg-198, Hg-199, Hg-200, and Hg-202 isotopes, the least abundant mercury isotope, Hg-196, has been produced for the first time with a concentration as high as 97%.
