Abstract

The photoproduction of axion-like particles (ALPs) is investigated in electron–ion (EIC) and ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions (UPCs) considering the Primakoff production from a nucleus and effective Lagrangian for ALP coupling to photons. The model is employed to calculate the integrated cross section and event numbers as a function of the ALP mass and axion-photon coupling. Predictions are shown for EICs and proton–nucleus and nucleus–nucleus in UPCs at the large hadron collider. The results show that a considerable number of events can be produced on the planned experiments, specially for low ALP masses of few GeVs. Numerical calculations are provided in the kinematic coverage of the planned machines electron ion collider, large hadron electron collider and future circular collider.
