Abstract

Production of tantalum (Ta) powder was studied by means of injection of tantalum chloride (TaCl5) vapor into molten LiCl-KCl containing molten metallic zinc (Zn). Production experiments were carried out in the temperature range of 773~973 K, and the feed rate of TaCl5 vapor was set at 42~180 mg•min-1 by precisely controlling the vapor pressure of TaCl5 with an external heater. As a result, purity of Ta powder product increased with increasing experimental temperature. Although the purity of Ta powder obtained is almost independent of the injecting position of TaCl5, the yield was high when TaCl5 was injected inside molten Zn.
