Abstract

The present study was undertaken with the objective of producing Sm-Fe magnets with the (Sm,Zr)Fe3 phase and investigate their structures and magnetic properties. Sm-Fe magnets were prepared by spark plasma sintering of rapidly quenched (Sm,Zr)Fe3 ribbons. The SmFe3 magnets containing only the SmFe3 phase did not show high coercivity. The substitution of Zr for Sm in the SmFe3 magnets increased their coercivity. The (Sm0.7Zr0.3)Fe3 magnet consisted of the (Sm,Zr)Fe3 phase and exhibited a coercivity as high as 11.3 kOe. Microstructural studies revealed that the (Sm0.7Zr0.3)Fe3 magnet consisted of fine grains with an average diameter of 50–100 nm.
