Abstract

The production of photons at large transverse momentum can be used as a direct probe of the short-distance dynamics of hadronic collisions. We calculate the cross section for high-${p}_{T}$ photons produced in $\ensuremath{\pi}p$ collisions from lowest-order quantum-chromodynamics (QCD) and higher-order constituent-interchange-model (CIM) processes. We investigate characteristic features of the QCD and CIM contributions, respectively, and discuss the experimental indicators of the presence of CIM contributions. We emphasize the frequent production of single-photon jets.
