Abstract

Techniques for production of intense beams of multiply charged ions are reviewed and discussed. Emphasis is given to low ion velocity which is of special interest for experiments in atomic physics. Properties of various ion sources as their attainable ion charge states, ion beam qualities, ion yields and technical peculiarities are described. Additionally, techniques for measuring metastable ion beam fractions are covered. Where possible, it is tried to assess the expectable further developments.
