Abstract

Technology for direct production of mixed alcohols from synthesis gas has been reviewed. Though many catalyst systems have been proposed so far, these can be divided into following two groups: modified methanol synthesis catalysts and modified Fischer-Tropsch catalysts. Here, we have taken a look at the technologies with respect to catalysts and processes and have particularly commented on them from practical and economical points of view. Mixed alcohols are obviously useful as additives to gasoline and can be used in practice, though there seems to be a limit to the volume of mixed alcohols which can be added to gasoline. The economics of production of mixed alcohols from synthesis gas, however, is presently low because of stable and low oil prices.
