Abstract

Since the publication in this journal1 of a note by P. C. Thonemann and R. B. King, entitled “Production of High-Frequency Energy by Ionized Gases”, a large number of experiments have been made in this laboratory on the noise and oscillations in cold-cathode and hot-cathode discharge-tubes, when placed in a transverse magnetic field2. Our experiments were carried out with nitrogen at a pressure varying from 1 to 50 µ mercury in cold-cathode discharge tubes. The greatest care was taken to localize the magnetic field of an electromagnet, to hold constant the pressure at a fixed level and to purify the gas (sp1ectroscopically pure nitrogen).
