Abstract

If properly used, the bench-scale fermentor (working volume, 2–10 liters) can produce gram quantities of heterologous proteins from rDNA Escherichia coli cultures. The important operational features of bench fermentors are discussed. Parameters that affect product yield and product quality are reviewed, and procedures for initial evaluation of system performance as well as for subsequent optimization are recommended.
