Abstract

Energy spectra of positive and negative pions from the processes n+p → π ±+ N + N have been measured for incident neutron energies from 460 to 560 MeV at average emission angles of 90° and 166° in the centre of mass system. A significant asymmetry in the production of π + and π − has been found at backward angles. This result manifests a significant contribution of the non-resonant pion production from an isoscalar initial state.
