Abstract Results of detailed calculations are presented for the spectrum of transition radiation produced when relativistic charged particles traverse astrophysical dust grains. The "formation zone" for X-ray generation is greater than dimensions of typical astrophysical grains so that the efficiency of the process is appreciably reduced. When competing processes and upper limits to the galactic electron flux are considered, neither the low-energy ( k keV) nor the higher-energy ( 1-20 keV) X-rays associated with the galactic disk can be explained by transition radiation from grains. This conclusion is contrary to that of some other investigators. Transition radiation is comparable with other radiation processes in some models for the nuclei of active galaxies.
