Abstract
Clostridium difficile has been demonstrated to produce at least two toxins: an enterotoxin (toxin A) which elicits haemorrhagoc fluid accumulation in the rabbit ileal loop (RIL) test and a potent cytotoxin (toxin B). We report the isolation of an enterotoxic factor inducing a positive response in the RIL test without haemorrhage. This factor was separated by ion-exchange chromatography and its molecular weight, as estimated by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, was about 45 000.
