Abstract

The introduction of the third generation of fighter aircraft into the air forces of the western hemisphere will soon be completed, involving a gigantic increase in operational capabilities and the consequent necessity to develop new concepts of tactics, operational command and control systems, etc. Apart from these problems, however, the air forces concerned were confronted with fundamental changes in the maintenance concept for their new aircraft. The Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) is right now in the process of introducing the General Dynamics F-16 aircraft and encounters various problems with regard to the above-mentioned changes. An attempt is being made to cope with these problems at each maintenance level. The case to be dealt with by this paper illustrates the difficulties experienced in connection with the adaptation of the organization and the production control system of a major RNLAF overhaul facility as a result of the innovations in fighter aircraft technology.
