Abstract

In this study solid state fermentation (SSF), was evaluated using a novel PolyHIPE Polymer (PHP) matrix. The matrix was developed with approach for improving the production of antibiotic from Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2), made-up with different pore sizes (55, 39, 19 µm) with surface chemistry Sulphonated/Neutralised. The matrix was packed in micro-bioreactor for the production of antibiotics, the growth conditions such as pores size of the matrix was investigated against the growth time (From 0 to 168 hours) and two the extracts were produced, Prodigiosin a member of tripyrrole family red pigment and Actinorhodin a dimeric benzoisochromanequinone antibiotic which belongs to a class of aromatic polyketides. The concentration of extracted antibiotics and their activities were examined by disk diffusion method. The two produced compounds were tested against the microbial strains (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Penicillium notatum) and the inhibition effects were measured. As a result, it was concluded that the largest zone of inhibition (diameter in mm) was observed in the plate inoculated with the strains of DSM 10 (Bacillus subtilis), inhibited by prodigiosin extract.
