Abstract

The objective of this study was to explore the utilization of open-dump solid waste by refuse-derived fuel (RDF) production. Eight RDF samples with different composition percentages were produced. The experimental results indicated that bulk density of eight RDF samples including RDF-A, RDF-B, RDF-C, RDF-D, RDF-E, RDF-F, RDF-G and RDF-H yield in range of 118–259 kg/m3. These were comparable to some kinds of biomass such as sawdust, soft wood chips and baled straw. Heating value, moisture content, volatile matter, ash residue, and fixed carbon were in the range of 28.34–30.93 MJ/kg, 0.00–1.47 %, 85.55–90.71 %, 5.97–10.02 % and 2.53–5.06 %, respectively. Metal compositions, such as Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn and Pb yielded lower values than values of the European RDF quality standard. For the experimental combustion results, it was shown that the emissions of CO, SO2, NO, and HCl were below the standard criteria of the Pollution Control Department.
