Abstract

The photochemical behaviour of benzophenoneimine and fluorenoneimine in several solvents on irradiation in the 200 – 300 (400) nm range was studied. Reduction to hydrocarbons diphenylmethane and fluorene was consistently observed, although to varying extents, with corresponding oxidation of the reactive solvents to dimers. Variable amounts of nitrogenous compounds were observed in addition to radical coupling and dimerization products. A certain amount of polymeric material accompanied all the photolyses. The product study was also extended to the photolysis in methanol of the benzophenoneimine and fluorenoneimine hydrochlorides.
