Abstract

A discussion of the technology of industrial robots and research directions is presented. Product trends are discussed highlighting the emphasis on meeting specific application requirements with economic return. Product advances are realized more in controls than in mechanics. It is argued that the introduction and use of low cost sensors holds the key to advances in robot intelligence and migration into intelligent processing systems. Research trends and technological/economic drivers highlight the need for collaboration between industry and academia.
