Abstract

Calculation shows that the quantity of chemical waste generated by coke production at OAO EVRAZ NTMK is more than 1000 t per month. Recent changes in coke production that may affect waste generation are considered: the introduction of batch crushing; relining of coke batteries 5 and 6; shut-down of coke batteries 7 and 8; hot repairs at coke batteries 9 and 10; shutdown of the open-hearth shop, where some of the chemical waste had been incinerated; discontinuation of the removal of light pyridine bases from the coke-oven gas in the byproduct-capture shop; the discontinuation of the production of heavy pyridine bases in the tar-distillation shop and their processing in the rectification shop; and the closing of the department of coumarone–indene resins. Recalculated with respect to the batch, the total rate of chemical-waste generation in coke production at OAO EVRAZ NTMK is 0.443%. A complex waste-processing system has been developed: 30% of the total is sent to the coal store and processed with the coal batch in coke ovens; 27% is processed to produce emulsion, which is added to the batch; and 43% is processed with tar, pitch, and raw benzene. Such waste processing at OAO EVRAZ NTMK increases its monthly output by 250 t for coke; 300 t for tar; 880000 m3 for coke-oven gas; and 180 t for commercial products.
