Abstract

In this present study, 0.66 volume percentage of biocompatible nano-sized titanium dioxide particles were incorporated into commercially pure biodegradable magnesium matrix using blend-press-sinter-extrusion powder metallurgy technique avoiding ball milling. The incorporated titanium dioxide particles dispersed reasonably uniformly in the matrix and significantly refined the magnesium grain size. Incorporated nano-sized titanium dioxide particles significantly improved the tensile ductility, compressive yield strength and ultimate compressive strength of the magnesium matrix without affecting its hardness and tensile strength. The nanoparticles also reduced the tensile-compressive yield strength asymmetry in the reinforced magnesium. The reinforcement particle changed the fracture mode of magnesium under tensile load only.
