Abstract

ABSTRACT In several industries, suspensions or/and emulsions need to be processed at various stages. Physical processes such as aggregation/deaggregation or emulsification/deemulsification are carried out, optimised or scaled up or down. Engineering science is far from being perfected. However, a great deal of scientific information is available, often published in context of Stability or Rheology. In this review, such information is gathered and put in the perspective of processing. The fundamentals of processing are thus discussed emphasizing the importance of colloidal forces and hydrodynamics. Methods to manipulate the processes by systematic use of hydrodynamics, chemicals and proper time sequence have also been suggested.
