Abstract

Although the majority of PM stainless steel parts are fabricated from austenitic alloys (300 Series), there are applications where martensitic or ferritic alloys (400 Series) may be used to advantage. Often this advantage is simply economic, 400 Series alloys do not generally contain nickel unlike 300 Series alloys; thus cost savings can be realized if reduced corrosion resistance can be tolerated. Properties may also dictate the choice, such as the higher strength attainable in the heat-treatable martensitic grades. John Reinshagen and John Witsberger review the more popular of the 400 Series PM alloys including the properties that can be expected in finished parts.
