Abstract

The electricity generation from coal using conventional coal fired power plant is very expensive when flue gas emissions are considered in the system. The integrated gasification combine cycle (IGCC) is an alternative option which is efficient, environmentally benign, and economically competitive to the conventional coal fired power plants. In this paper, IGCC is modelled and simulated based on low grade coals of Thar coalfields located in Sindh, Pakistan. The simulation model of IGCC consists of coal and slurry preparation (sizing), gasification, syngas cooling, ash removal, acid gas removal and combustion of gaseous fuel in the combine cycle power plant. The thermodynamic model of the process is developed using Aspen Plus process simulation software. The objective of this study is to predict an energy and environmental performance of IGCC based on Thar coalfields. The results indicated that block-5 and block-6 are more efficient in terms of power produced in IGCC.
