Abstract

Precision laser cutting has been more and more involved in patterning or structuring thin sheet metals. The cut quality and speed depend strongly on laser parameters and other process parameters used, especially for small features. In this paper Q-switched fundamental and second harmonic Nd: YAG lasers were used to cut small features on thin stainless steel sheets. The effect of laser parameters on cut quality was investigated in detail. Optimized process conditions were obtained. The experimental observations were understood on the base of melt formation and material removal mechanisms.Precision laser cutting has been more and more involved in patterning or structuring thin sheet metals.
