Abstract

It is very difficult to forge structural parts that contain thin wedged ribs. Several factors affect the forming of the rib. These include flow stress of the material, applied pressure, friction, rib angle, rib width entrance, rib base radius. To study the effect of these various parameters a mathematical model of the rib formation was postulated and tested. The model is based on elementary analysis. The major part is simulated in axisymmetric conditions and the rib is simulated in plane strain. The model was tested and verified for the isothermal forging of model-parts of impeller-type and for different materials.
